What you can do
-
Name people once
Faces that look like the same person are grouped for you. Give a group a name and all of its photos sit behind it, and photos you add later join the people they match.
-
Search by person
Type a name in search and pick the person. With Smart Search on too, add words to it: Alex at the beach, Sam with a birthday cake.
-
See who is in a photo
Open a photo and "In this photo" shows the people found in it. Pick one to see all of their photos.
-
Fix it in a tap
Merge two groups that are the same person, take a photo out with "Not this person", or choose the photo that shows on a person's circle.
-
One index, all your devices
Your devices share one encrypted index, so a photo read on your laptop does not need reading again on your phone. Names and corrections follow you too.
-
On the web, then every app
Personas is in the web app now. The desktop app for Mac, Windows and Linux and the iPhone and Android apps get it in their next update.
How it works
- 1
Turn it on for yourself
Turn Personas on in a workspace. It is just for you: other members do not see your people, and they are not told.
- 2
Your device reads the faces
The app or your browser reads the faces on your own device. The result is encrypted with your Vault key before it is saved, so dosya cannot read it.
- 3
People appear, you name them
People start to show up as soon as the first photos are read. Photos you upload later are read as your device gets to them.
Built for privacy first
Face data is sensitive, so Personas reads faces on your own device and keeps the result encrypted with your own key.
- Read on your own device
- Faces are read on your own device, in the app or your browser. No face is read on dosya's servers, and no outside face recognition service is involved.
- End-to-end encrypted
- The result is encrypted with a key only you hold, opened with your Vault passphrase or recovery code. dosya stores only encrypted data and cannot read, search or hand it over.
- Just for you
- Each person has their own index. Other members of the workspace never see yours, and nothing from it is shared with them or with share links.
- Never in the Vault
- Vault files, hidden and locked photos, the trash and folders you skip are never read.
- Delete it any time
- Delete my people in this workspace removes your index for it from dosya and from your devices when they next sync. Your photos are not touched.
- Keep your recovery code
- dosya cannot recover your index. If you lose both your Vault passphrase and your recovery code, your devices read the photos again, but the names are lost.

Questions
Is Personas the same as Smart Search?
No. They are separate, and each is turned on by itself. Smart Search finds files by what they are about and by the text in them. Personas finds people. With both on, you can search for a person and words together.
Which plans include Personas?
Every plan, Free included. There is no photo limit, because the reading happens on your own device.
Can dosya see my people?
No. Your device encrypts the index with a key only you hold before it is saved. dosya stores only the encrypted data, its size and the fact that Personas is on.
How long does it take?
It depends on how many photos the workspace has and on your device. People start to show up as soon as the first photos are read. The desktop app is the fastest way to read a large library. In the web app, keep the tab open while it reads.
Do other members see my people?
No. Each person who turns Personas on gets their own index. A colleague who wants Personas turns it on for themselves.
Can I keep some folders out?
Yes. In Personas settings you can skip folders. Vault, hidden and locked photos are never read.
What about photos of other people?
You decide whether to run Personas on photos of other people, and you are responsible for doing so lawfully where you live. The Biometric Data Policy explains what someone can do if their face is in your photos.
What happens when I turn it off?
Your index for that workspace is deleted from dosya and from your devices when they next sync. Your photos are not touched. You can turn it on again later and it starts fresh.
